OKLAHOMA CITY -- For the first time in a decade, the American Automotive Association is predicting a drop in drivers, and gas prices are getting the blame.

The organization predicts 40.5 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles from home over the Fourth of July holiday this year, a half-million less than 2007.

Even Oklahoma, home to some of the nation’s lowest pump prices, is expecting a 2 percent drop.

Travelers Jim and Shirley Hayes passed through Oklahoma on a trip from Texas to Wichita in their RV. They said they won’t be taking another trip over the Fourth of July like they usually do.

“We will have our kids over,” Shirley Hayes said.

At current prices, trips between Oklahoma City and Dallas would cost the driver of an average car $58.46 for a round-trip. Driving to Kansas City and back would cost $97.90. Driving from Oklahoma City to Albuquerque, N.M., would cost $154.48.
