OKLAHOMA CITY -- Attorneys for the NBA have filed trademark registration applications on behalf of the new Oklahoma City team for six nicknames, KOCO.com has learned.VIDEO:
NBA Files For 6 OKC TrademarksThose nicknames include the Oklahoma City Barons, Oklahoma City Bison, Oklahoma City Energy, Oklahoma City Marshalls (sic), Oklahoma City Thunder and Oklahoma City Wind. The NBA registered these trademark applications on July 21.Also on July 21, Corporation Service Company (CSC) registered new domain names for okcbisonbasketball.com, okcenergybasketball.com, okcmarshallsbasketball.com and okcwindbasketball.com. The company that owns Corporate Domains had already registered okcthunderbasketball.com and .net on July 10.CSC is the registrar of record for the NBA.A source close to the ownership group told KOCO sports director Mark Rodgers last week that the team name will be the Oklahoma City Thunder. That information has not changed, Rodgers said on Friday.None of the trademark applications are associated directly with Professional Basketball Club, LLC, which is the organization that owns the Oklahoma City team. There are five registrations in the federal government's Trademark Electronic Search System (TESS) for each possible nickname. Each registration covers various applications such as team gear, trading cards and other things to which a nickname could apply.Stay tuned to koco.com for further details, and tune in to Eyewitness News 5 at 5, 6 and 10 p.m. for any new details from Mark Rodgers.
