Packers Reportedly Call Teams About Favre

Report Claims Favre Called Vikings On Packers' Phone

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell encouraged the Packers to begin testing the market to see what the interest is in quarterback Brett Favre, ESPN and the NFL Network reported.

According to the sports networks, Green Bay began making phone calls to several teams Tuesday. Numerous teams -- in both the AFC and NFC -- confirmed to the media outlets they were contacted by the Packers.

Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson told Goodell that the organization wants to "move on" without Favre, ESPN reported. The commissioner reportedly told Thompson if Favre requests to be reinstated to the NFL, Goodell will grant his request.

Various media reports claim Favre wants to play for the Minnesota Vikings. The Packers alleged last week Minnesota made inappropriate contact with the quarterback, who announced his retirement in March before recently deciding he wants to return to the league. Green Bay officials claimed that the Vikings' offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell contacted Favre before the quarterback asked Green Bay to release him.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune reported NFL officials made a visit to Minnesota on Tuesday to talk to the team about the tampering allegations.

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel also reported Tuesday that Favre, who was told by Green Bay that he could return to the team as a backup to Aaron Rodgers, used a cell phone issued by the Packers to placed "repeated calls to (Vikings) coach Brad Childress and offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell."

According to ESPN, another contender to land the quarterback could be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Favre worked under Bucs coach Jon Gruden when he served as a position coach in Green Bay. The team has also been struggling with contract issues surrounding its 38-year-old quarterback, Jeff Garcia.
