OKLAHOMA CITY -- High winds from a storm that hit Friday afternoon toppled power poles and left electric lines lying on top of vehicles.“I was trying to drive through here,” said Derek Timmons. “It started storming real hard.”“All of a sudden, it was just raining,” said Taletha Cook, who was driving a travel trailer near Interstate 40 and Mustang Road when the storm hit. “Then the rain started blowing, and it just started beating so hard on my windshield. I didn’t know what happened, and then I got to where I couldn’t see.”
Seconds later, wind snapped utility poles, and Cook said her travel trailer went on a wild ride.“I was in the fast lane, and it picked me up and pulled me over,” she said. “I’m OK, at least. The police helped me crawl out the driver’s-side window.”Nearby, KOCO’s news helicopter Sky 5 caught firefighters rescuing a child and adults from another car that was caught under the lines.“The most scary part for me was that folks were driving over these live power cables,” said driver Danny Thompson.“This is definitely the biggest highway accident that I've ever seen go down that I was close to,” said Timmons.Workers spent the evening trying to repair the lines, but another round of rain moved in and made the work tougher. No one was hurt, but Cook said the incident left her nerves rattled.“I’m a little shaky still,” she said.
