New On DVD: 'Camp Rock,' Cyrus 3-D Concert

Also New: 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles'

POSTED: 1:32 pm CDT August 21, 2008

'Camp Rock: Extended Rock Star Edition' (Not Rated): I'm not even going to try to pretend to understand the fascination with the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus. After all, I'm more than 30 years past the age of their target audience.

But the Disney Channel certainly understands the appeal, and continues to capitalize on it in a huge way with their quick release of the Jonas Brothers' summer movie cable hit "Camp Rock."

For those unfamiliar with the brother trio, they're comprised of Kevin, Joe, and Nick Jonas (ages 21, 19 and 15, respectively), and there's no question that they're musically talented (their new album, "A Little Bit Longer" debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts this week with 525,000 copies sold, and the "Camp Rock" soundtrack is No. 8 on the charts). They have a strong tie to Cyrus as the teen singer's opening act.

Set at a camp for aspiring musicians, "Camp Rock" has "High School Musical" feeling with a leading man that makes the young girls swoon (Joe Jonas, playing a rocker-turned-camp counselor); a poor, but musically talented girl (Demi Lovato) who finds her way into the camp because her mom is the cook; and a rich, high-maintenance diva (Meaghan Jette Martin) who threatens to spoil the proceedings. Joe Jonas is the featured brother in the film as Kevin and Nick get a "with" billing in the opening credits.

While the films overall have a similar feel, the major difference between "High School Musical" and "Camp Rock" is that the musical numbers in "Camp Rock" aren't nearly as spontaneous, but staged performances by the brothers (music is definitely their strong suit in the film), Lovato and others. After all, it is a camp for singers and musicians.

While "Camp Rock" is full of catchy tunes, the film doesn't quite measure up to the spark of the first "High School Musical" (although it betters the second). And with "Camp Rock's" success, you can sure bet that sequels are on the way as the "High School Musical" group graduates in theaters this fall.

DVD Features: The edition of the disc is made "special" by a never-before-seen extended ending. The disc also includes various production featurettes (vignettes on the Jonas Brothers, Lovato, "How to be a Rock Star!"), a sing-along option, karaoke and more. (Walt Disney Home Entertainment)

'Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie' (G): Miley Cyrus has no doubt taken a public relations beating over the past few months over her risqué Vanity Fair photos, but before the hubbub, she captured big attention for a carefully-marketed 3-D movie.

Originally billed as a one-week only theatrical event -- which was not surprisingly extended when the movie made tons of cash in its first week -- the "Best of Both Worlds" features 'tween singing sensation Cyrus and her Disney Channel alter-ego Hannah Montana in concert.

Fans of Cyrus will delight in the presentation of hits, including the title tune "Best of Both Worlds," the theme to "Hannah Montana," which launched Cyrus' skyrocketing career. For some, the concert film features the best of three worlds, since the Jonas Brothers also perform.

While nobody can reasonably expect the DVD to match the big-screen theatrical 3-D quality, the DVD release's 3-D presentation definitely improves upon the concert's recent airing on the Disney Channel. The film isn't entirely in 3-D, as the film takes us backstage on Cyrus' tour, featuring her dad and former country music star, Billy Ray Cyrus, as well as the tour choreographer, "High School Musical" director Kenny Ortega.

DVD Features: For those who don't want to bother with the 3-D experience, a second disc features the film in 2-D. The release also includes bonus songs and a concert sing-along option. (Walt Disney Home Entertainment)

'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' -- The Complete First Season (Not Rated): The interest is definitely on the rise for the "Terminator" franchise again with "Terminator: Salvation" (starring Christian Bale) in production. But since the film is slated for a summer 2009 release, fans can indulge in "The Sarah Connor Chronicles," a thrilling television series that made its debut during the recent Writers Guild of America strike.

The show, meant to be a mid-season replacement, was only comprised of nine episodes. But it was plenty of time to apparently erase the existence of the third "Terminator" film, "T3: Rise of the Machines," since the events take place after the end of "T2: Judgment Day."

Lena Heady (the stunning Queen Gorgo from "300") plays Sarah Connor, who continues her life of a fugitive as she tries to protect her son John's (Thomas Dekker) future as a leader in the war against the machines. Taking one film from "T3," "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" features a female terminator (gorgeous "Serenity" star Summer Glau), a beautiful, yet emotion-free cyborg who tries to blend in with society as she is sent back to protect John.

The great thing about "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" is that it has a theatrical feel, as no expenses are spared in bringing the sort of "Terminator" action and effects that we're used to, to the small screen. And thanks to some interesting storylines, "Sarah Connor" can hold her head high as a worthy companion to the "Terminator" films.

DVD Features: Cast and crew commentaries, production featurettes, extended cut of Episode 7, cast audition tapes, gag reel and more. (Warner Home Video)
