AARP To Recognize 50 Oklahomans Over 50

Honorees to Be Recognized As Part of 50th Anniversary Celebration

UPDATED: 11:10 am CDT July 2, 2008

To celebrate its 50th Anniversary, AARP, in partnership with KOCO-TV, will recognize 50 Oklahomans over the age of 50 who have made a difference in the lives of others or an Oklahoma town or community.

Nominations are being accepted via e-mail or regular mail now through August 8th. Honorees must be living and do not have to be a member of AARP, according to Craig Davis, Associate State Director.

"We are looking for Oklahomans who possess the indelible spirit of our founder Dr. Ethel Percy Andrus, a pioneering educator, activist and community leader who continues to inspire our association to make a positive difference in lives of others," Davis said. "As we planned ways to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of AARP, we realized that honoring those who make a difference in the lives of others is a fitting tribute to Dr. Andrus."

Andrus is quoted as saying: "The human contribution is the essential ingredient. It is only in the giving of oneself to others that we truly live."

Honorees will be recognized at a State Capitol reception scheduled for August 26th, he said.
